Aquitaine is well-known for Bordeaux but also for its wines, its gastronomy, its beaches, its historical places, its mild climate, etc.
The Entre-deux-Mers is not the best known part of Gironde.
But it has kept its authentic charm with many assets and some very good wines, like Chateau Turcaud, our neighbor.
Its hilly landscapes made up of vineyards, meadows and woods, dotted with villages and wine “châteaux”, its many equestrian centres, its cycle paths, etc. make it a privileged place to rest.
But many other landscapes, other atmospheres, can be discovered in other parts of Aquitaine, around the Entre-deux-Mers.
Entre-deux-Mers
Bastides, other historical towns, small villages and scattered monuments can be admired.
As in La Sauve-Majeure (5mn away), the old abbey, founded in 1079, or the Saint-Pierre Church and the organ belonging to Charles Gounod.
But also seven bastides including Créon (5mn away) or Sauveterre-de-Guyenne (25mn away). East of Sauveterre, the smallest village in France, Castelmoron d’Albret.
South of La Sauve, Cadillac (20mn) and its castle of the Dukes of Epernon, Saint-Macaire and its houses, gates and medieval ramparts (35mn). In Verdelais (35mn away), Malagar, François Mauriac’s estate, overlooking the Garonne and Sauterne vineyards.
North, towards Saint-Emilion
On the other side of the Dordogne river, Saint-Emilion (25mn), classified among “the most beautiful villages of France”, then, after having crossed the vineyard of Pomerol, Libourne and its market (30mn).
Further west, north of Bordeaux
Bourg overlooking the Dordogne river, or Blaye and its citadel which watches over the Gironde river (1h05 away).
Then, between the sea and the Gironde, the Médoc and its famous châteaux such as Margaux, Beychevelle or Lafite-Rothschild.
Towards the sea and Arcachon
Further west, the ocean.
The “Bassin” with the “Dune du Pilat” and the seaside resort of Arcachon (1h15 away). The long, wild stretches of beach at Lacanau-Océan (1h30 away).
To the southwest, towards the Sauternes region
South of the Garonne river, the villages of La Réole (35mn) or Bazas (1h), the Clementine castles of Bertrand de Got (1264-1314), who became Clement V, 1st Pope of Avignon: Roquetaillade in Mazères (50mn), Villandraut (50mn), Budos (50mn), Fargues (40mn)
Bordeaux and surroundings
Bordeaux (35 minutes away), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has the largest protected area of old streets and the largest 18th century neoclassical façade in Europe.
To discover: the banks of the Garonne river, the wine city, the St-André cathedral, the plant garden lined with private mansions, the St-Michel district, etc.
Nearby, to the South, the castle of La Brède (35mn away), where Montesquieu lived (1689-1755).
Some farther afield trips
Northwards, along the Gironde river, after Blaye and its citadel (1h05), the castle of Beaulon and its surprising blue fountains, at St Dizant du Gua (1h15). And continuing further north, the small village of Talmont and its 12th century church overlooking the vast Gironde estuary (1h45).
Towards the East and Périgord, the village of Duras and its castle (55mn away), Ste-Foy-la-grande and its half-timbered houses (1h away) or Bergerac (1h20 away).
To the south-east, Agen and its old district (1.5 hours away) or Nérac (1.40 hours away), on the banks of the Baïse, and its castle of the Lords of Albret, ancestors of Henri IV.
Some sports activities
For cycling enthusiasts, 3km north of La Grave, you can join the Roger Lapébie cycle path, a former railway line that runs from Bordeaux to Sauveterre de Guyenne, a link in the circuit between the Mediterranean and Bordeaux.
For hiking enthusiasts, there are several signposted walks in the Entre-deux-mers.
For golf enthusiasts, the nearest course is the Golf de Teynac in Beychac et Caillau (20 minutes away).
